Spellbound: Review
Spellbound is a captivating, animated film that explores the struggles of teenager Ellian, as the film beautifully depicts the themes of the desire for normalcy. Despite its intended younger audience, Spellbound may struggle to hold their attention due to its heavy-handed themes and pacing. Despite this, the film's brilliant vocal performances from the cast make it a visually appealing film. The film's use of magic, neon-like lights, and a gorgeous costume and world design add to its appeal.
A Man On The Inside
A fun, easy watch that will quickly become a comfort watch for many people. A Man on the Inside gives comedy, funny characters and a message about loneliness and finding your way out of it. There are funny moments lifted by the ensemble cast but Ted Danson is exceptional in walking the line of touching moments and bringing out the levity in the heavier
Nobody Wants This
Chemistry is key in the romantic drama "Nobody Wants This." Bell and Brody's believable chemistry helps build up Joanne and Noah's relationship, with Brody bringing a calm and endearing quality to Noah. Despite shorter episodes, the story focusses on their romantic relationship, with subplots enhancing their dynamic. The predictable pattern in the episodes can be frustrating, but supporting characters like Morgan and Sasha steal the show, adding depth to the series. The exploration of religion and culture falls short, lacking depth in Joanne's character.
Kaos: Review
An entertaining, dark but comedic and grounded series that takes on Greek Myths and updates them for a modern setting while keeping them grounded to make the show fun and feel epic. If you know the myths and characters, there are still new takes built into the story that weaves together with care. Goldblum is a selling point of a series and is fantastic as the malicious but funny Zeus, yet it is the three humans and Dionysus that steal the series. Netflix should continue this story as there is more to tell and many more myths to look forward to with Kaos’ immersive world and shocking moments.
Emily in Paris: Review
Emily in Paris returns for its fourth and final season and fans of the show will be delighted to hear that Emily has finally made a decision in terms of her romantic endeavours! While the series is lacking in the female friendship, it delivers in swoon-worthy moments that is key for any romantic drama.
The Umbrella Academy: Review
A disappointing final season that wastes too much time on romantic relationship drama, love triangles and side plots that barely serve the narrative. Instead of a six-episode final season, it would have been better for a two-special to end The Umbrella Academy but it is clear the show did not know how to end or, when it figured it out, did not know how to get there with anything entertaining or satisfying.
Bridgerton Season 3: Review
Splitting the season in two had a clear impact on the pacing and by adding a mid-season break that broke apart the much needed urgency needed to keep the story going and give it any hope of substance. While there was a slightly more serious tone to the latter part of the season, having a romantic leading couple that lacked chemistry and writing that had no clear or cohesive structure has ensured that the third season of Bridgerton is its weakest. Fans of the series already know it has been renewed for a fourth season, one can only hope that the writers and showrunner has learnt from the many mistakes of the third season.
A Part of You: Review
A raw and real portrayal of grief and identity is seen through the eyes of sisters Agnes and Julia. A Part of You showcases complex relationships with a heavy subject that is an honest and emotional ride carried by Felicia Maxime and Zara Larsson, who give layered and beautiful performances.
Bridgerton Season 3: Review
It seems that under the new showrunner, Bridgerton is lost for ideas and is afraid of the spark it had cultivated in past seasons. While Coughlan is a strong lead and propels the story forward, Newton is anything but. Ideals of a more feminist approach and fierier chemistry were promised but left unfulfilled, but the season is saved by the ensemble cast of Hannah Dodd, Emma Naomi, Sam Phillips, and Martins Imhangbe. Thankfully, we still have Featherington shenanigans that keep the plot entertaining through Portia’s repeated desire for survival and security.
Ripley: Review
Ripley could have easily been an interesting psychological drama with a fleshed-out, explored character, but the eight-episode run is a tiresome watch with pretty shots and nothing much else. There is no intrigue for the character or the murderous situations because all the fun and life have been drained out of the series.
